The Sao Chaliang stone formations are the result of natural sculpturing of two
sandstone layers of differing resistance to weathering. The layers
were deposited at the bottom of a sea in the Cretaceous Period; the thinner, more
resistant top layer approximately 130 million years ago and the
thicker soft layer approximately 180 million years ago. Both layers
contain shells of ancient mollusks, indicating that the deposits were laid
down in a shallow sea. Most of the sculpting was probably done during
dryer eras when windblown sand ate away at the softer under layer of stone. The information below has been transcribed from a marker at Sao Chaliang. "เสาเฉลียง" ประดิมากรรมชิ้นเอกร่วกันของหนทราย 2 ยุคดีอ หนทรายยุค "ดรีเดชียล" ฃงมีอายุประมณ 130 ล้วนปั เป็นส่วนดอกเห็ดอยู่ท่อนบน และหินทรายยุค "ไดโนเสาร์" มีอายุประมาณ 180 ล้วนปั เป็นส่วนต้มเสาหนท่อนล่าง โดยผ่านการถูกชะล้างพังทะลสย อันเกิดจากลภาพลากาศ, ฝนและลมพายุเป็นเวลาหล่ายลานปี ชึ่งคุณสมบัติทางธรณีวิทยา ของหินทรายนั้นง่ายต่อการสึกกร่อนกว่าหินชนิดอื่นที่จัดอย่ในลุ่มหินชั้นเด้วยกัน และเมื่อ ผ่านการสึกกร่อนไปใด้ระยะหนึ่งก็มีสิ่งที่เรียกว่า "กระบวการต้านทานทางธรรมชาติ" และแรงกดทับขอเม็ดฝนทำให้หินรายแข็งยิ่งขึ้น เป็นผลให้สามารถรักษาสภาพให้คงรป ได้ดังที่เห็นอยู่ในทุกวันนี้ "เสาเฉลียง" แผลงมาจาก "สะเลียง" แปลว่า "เลาหิน" 'Sao Chaling is one
sculptures of natural. It came from 2 things, they are sandstone in "Kretacias"
period which look like mushroom on the top, aged about 130 million years old
and sandstone in "Dinosaur" period aged about 180 million years old. Which
is the tunk in the bottom. It was break down by weather, rain and wind
for ages. It was easily to rot. The process against the nature from
the sun and the stone. Pressing from gravitation force rains made it
maintain until today. Sao Chaliang comes from the word "Sa Liang" that
means "Stone Pillar".
