Wat Thewarat Kunchorn Worawiharn,
วัดเทวราชกุญชรวรวิหาร,
was originally a civil temple built
during the Ayutthaya Period and called Wat Samor Khraeng. During the
reign of King Rama IV, it was adopted as a third class royal temple and
given its current name after Krom Phra Phithak Thewet, son of King Rama II,
founder of the Kunchorn family and renovator of the temple. The
Ubosot (Ordination Hall), built during King Rama III's reign, has the same style as
Wat Phra Kaeo (the Grand Palace Temple). The principal Buddha image of
the Dwawarawadi period, made of bronze with gold covering, in the
Subduing Mara posture is enshrined in the Ubosot. The image is nine
feet in width and 11 feet high. The image was given the name Phra
Phuttha Thewarat Patimakorn by His Majesty King Rama IX on February 15,
2003 (B.E. 2546).
วัดเทวราชกุญชรวรวิหารเป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นตรี ชนิดวรวิหาร เดิมเป็นวัดราษฎร์ สร้างมาตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ขื่อ วัดสมอแครง ต่อมารัชกาลที่ ๔ ทรงพระกรณาโปรดเกล้าฯ รับเป็นพระอารามหลวง และพระราชทานนามวา วัดเทวราขกุญชร โดยนำพระนามเดิมของ กรมพระพิทักษ์เวศร์ ต้นสกุล กุญชร ณ อยุธยา พระราชโอรสในรัชกาลที่ ๒ ผู้ทรง บูรณะปฎิสังขรณ์วัด มาตั้งเป็นนามวัด พระอุโบสถสร้างในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๓ มีรูปทรงเช่นเดียวกับพระอุโบสถของ วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดารามฯ พระประธานในพระอุโบสถ เป็นพระพุทธรูปโลหะหล่อ ลงรักปิดทอง ปางมารวิชัย ผี่มือช่างสมัยทวาราวดี หน้าตักกว้าง ๙ ฟุต สูง ๑๑ ฟุต กรมศิลปากรได้ประกาศขี้นทะเบียนวัดนี้เป็นโบรณสถานสำคัญของชาติ เมื่อวันที่ ๒๒ พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ.๒๔๙๒ นอกจากนี้ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ ๙ ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานชื่อ พระพุทธรูปประจำพระอุโบสถว่า พระพุทธเทวราชปฎิมากร เมื่อวันที่ ๑๕ กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๖ |
